San Clemente News Desk: Recent Stories That Matter to Homeowners

Beaches, ballot measures, the pier and downtown openings, newest first, each with a link to the original report.

NEWS DESK · OCTOBER 2026

This is a short reading list, not a news site. We pick the recent San Clemente stories that matter to people who own or want to own a home here, write a plain summary of each, say why it matters and link to the original reporting. The newest come first, and each shows its date so you can judge how current it is.

The last two months

  • Beach Trail near Mariposa Point set to reopen after a $93 million rail protection project (Oct 8, 2026) — A ribbon-cutting was planned for Friday, October 9, to mark the end of OCTA's $93 million rail protection work at Mariposa Point. The project adds a nearly 1,400-foot wall to catch falling rock and restores the beach trail beside the tracks, which closed after a landslide in early 2024. The line carries Metrolink, Pacific Surfliner, freight and military trains, so protecting it matters beyond the beach. San Clemente Times City of San Clemente
  • Voters will decide Measure M, a sales tax for beach protection and fire safety (Oct 1, 2026) — A one-cent sales tax for ten years is on the November 3 ballot as Measure M. The measure would send about half of the roughly $15 million a year it would raise to beach sand and erosion work and half to fire and wildfire preparedness, with outside audits each year and an end date after a decade unless voters extend it. A city-sponsored half-cent coastal tax, Measure BB, failed in 2024 for lack of a two-thirds vote. It ties directly to the erosion that has narrowed beaches next to the rail line. San Clemente Times
  • Free sand, bags and shovels offered at two parks for winter storms (Sep 3, 2026) — Ahead of winter weather, residents can pick up free sand, sandbags and shovels at San Gorgonio Park and Richard T. Steed Memorial Park, according to the city. A routine step the city takes each winter to help homeowners. City of San Clemente
  • Zov's opens its first San Clemente restaurant on Avenida Del Mar (Aug 27, 2026) — A family-run restaurant group with Orange County roots has come to downtown. Zov's, which started in 1987, opened on Avenida Del Mar earlier this year, according to an August report in the Orange County Business Journal, which did not name an opening date. It anchors the north end of town. San Clemente Times
  • Hook & Cook to bring food and bait to the end of the pier (May 26, 2026) — A new pier concession is on the way: Hook and Cook, from the owners of The Picnic Café, will sell bait and tackle along with lobster rolls, tacos and fish and chips near the end of the pier. The four-year agreement was approved by the city, and the owners hoped to open around the start of July. The pier concession is the first thing many visitors see. How we choose

We favor city decisions, beach and rail projects, utilities, and new places to eat. We leave out crime, opinion and anything about individual people. For the market itself, see the market reports.

Summaries are our own words and every item links to the original report. Items based on a council agenda or a preview describe what was scheduled, so check the city's website for final votes. Last checked October 11, 2026.
